In the African community a 'Griot' was a person who was charged with keeping the stories of the village.

Everyone would tell the griot their stories and the Griot would remember them all, so that they could tell the future generations.

It is said that the stories the griot told had a very healing effect and enabled a state of well being and reassurance for the whole community.. And In Africa when a griot dies it was almost akin to a library being burnt down..
